SAGINAW – Cheryl Williams captured the cupcake crown winning first place at the 2019 Cupcake Throwdown, a baking competition sponsored by Michigan Sugar Company, WSGW and The Maytag Store. Williams, of Bay City, baked up “A Cupcake of Sunshine” during the competition, which was held Wednesday, Dec. 11, at The Maytag Store, 3800 Tittabawassee Road in Saginaw.
Second place went to Kamryn Chasnis of Saginaw for her “Chocolate Surprise Cupcakes” and third place went to Tiffany Bateson of Saginaw for her “Butterfinger Cupcakes.” The first-place winner receives a prize of $200; the second-place finisher a prize of $100 and the third-place contestant a prize of $50.
Other contestants who baked up delicious cupcakes are:
- Linda Schmidt of Kawkawlin, German Chocolate Cupcakes.
- Carol Socier of Bay City, Any Season Strawberry Creme Filled Cupcakes.
- Melissa Kildow of Grand Blanc, Double Chocolate Milkshake Stout Cupcakes with Raspberry Surprise and Salted Caramel Drizzle.
- Joan Gerhardt of Saginaw, Champagne Cupcakes with Raspberry Creme Filling.
The public is invited to attend the cooking competitions that take place from approximately 9 a.m. to noon at The Maytag Store. Local chefs interested in competing must submit their recipes to WSGW. Station employees choose up to eight competitors for each contest.
The next competition, the French Toast Frenzy, takes place Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020, at The Maytag Store.
