SAGINAW – Joan Gerhardt returned to the winner’s circle, taking first place at the 2020 French Toast Frenzy culinary competition with her “Ultimate Sweet and Savory French Toast.”
The event – a cooking competition sponsored by Michigan Sugar Company, WSGW and The Maytag Store – took place Wednesday, Feb. 12, at The Maytag Store, 3800 Tittabawassee Road, Saginaw.
Gerhardt, who lives in Saginaw, was awarded a $200 cash prize. She also was the winner of the 2019 Summer Salad Spectacular.
Second place at the French Toast Frenzy and $100 went to Kamryn Chasnis of Saginaw Township, who prepared “Crème Brûlée French Toast;” and third place and $50 was captured by Linda Schmidt of Kawkawlin for her “Hawaiian French Toast.”
Also competing were Mary Walk of Saginaw, who prepared “Cinnamon Cream French Toast” and Cheryl Williams of Bay City, who made “Mummy’s Sweet Toast.”
The cash prizes were provided by The Maytag Store.
The public is invited to attend the cooking competitions that take place from approximately 9 a.m. to noon at The Maytag Store. Local chefs interested in competing must submit their recipes to WSGW. Station employees choose up to eight competitors for each contest.
The next competition, the Great Grilled Cheese Challenge, takes place Wednesday, May 13.
